On Wednesday, we shared a video tutorial on how to make your own fingerpaint, but let’s be honest here: you are busy. Sometimes, you just don’t want to do everything from scratch, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of! I did a little digging and found a few companies that make fingerpaints that are much healthier and more eco-friendly than the conventional ones you’d find on store shelves.

What kiddo doesn’t love to fingerpaint, right? The thing about commercial fingerpaints is they are often full of not-so-natural ingredients, including petroleum products, and the packaging is none to green, either. Rather than deal with plastic packaging and questionable ingredients, you can make your own finger paint with ingredients that you probably have in the kitchen right now!

When you cut a glass bottle, you basically score the glass to weaken it and then use hot water to stress that fracture so the bottle breaks. A thorough sanding, and you’re ready to use an old wine or beer bottle as a tumbler, a vase, or anything you can dream up. The trouble with the scoring part is that it’s really hard to get an even cut when you’re doing it free hand.

Even for the greenest crafter, it’s hard to keep plastic out of our processes, isn’t it? You can do your best to cut back or choose recycled plastic materials, but at the end of the day it’s really tough to create craft projects without using plastic.
That struggle is why I’m super excited about Plastic Free, a new book from Beth Terry of My Plastic Free Life. The book is all about kicking the plastic habit in all aspects of your life, and crafting is no exception. We’re all about finding ways to get plastic out of our lives here at Crafting a Green World, so we’re super proud that one of our former writers–Karen Lee–is quoted in the book.

The thing about dog treats is…well…they are gross. Like, super gross. My husband and I quickly got sick of our pockets smelling like dog treats, so I whipped us up a couple of simple drawstring bags to hold them instead. Spring is heeeerrreeee! That means flirty spring dresses, and for me nothing spices up a cute dress like a sassy belt. This belt is my solution to a thrift store dress that had a lot of potential but needed a lot of love to go from frumpy to cute. I tried taking it in, raising the waist, and even changing up the neckline, but what this dress really needed was a big, wide belt to fix the silhouette. A pillowcase to the rescue!
