Three Companies that Make Eco-Friendly Fingerpaints

On Wednesday we shared a video tutorial on how to make your own fingerpaint, but let’s be honest here: you are busy. Sometimes, you just don’t want to do everything from scratch, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of! If making your own fingerpaint is not on your list of things to do, you can still use paints that are healthier for your child than most commercial fingerpaint.

I did a little digging and found a few companies that make fingerpaints that are much healthier and more eco-friendly than the ones you’d normally find on store shelves.

  • Eco Kids makes a truly natural fingerpaint made from vegetable dyes, corn starch, wheat paste, and clay.
  • Wee Can Too Art makes organic fingerpaint that’s totally edible!
  • Clementine Art makes all natural finger paints that are free of petroleum products and dyed with mineral pigments.

What about “non-toxic” fingerpaint?

Of course, most fingerpaints out there are going to be labeled as “non-toxic,” and that’s definitely a good start. Unlike “natural,” the term non-toxic is regulated. Any old company can slap the word natural on a product label, because it’s a just a marketing term. Non-toxic products, though do require testing before they can carry that label.

What non-toxic means is that the product won’t cause any immediate health concerns. So, you won’t get a headache or experience dizziness moments after opening the container, and probably not during one crafting session. Non-toxic products can contain petroleum products, though, along with additives and ingredients that might cause health problems with prolonged exposure or multiple exposures over time. If we’re rating craft supplies’ health and environmental impacts on a Good-Better-Best scale, think of non-toxic as falling squarely under the Better category.

Have you guys found other companies that make truly natural or organic fingerpaints? I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments!
