DIY Planters

Container gardening is a great way to grow some food or just add some green to your space when you don’t have a back yard. Heck, even if you do have a yard, growing in containers can be a great way to add a little interest to your garden and can help you get around some typical urban problems like poor or contaminated soil.

You could head to the big box store for your planter-y needs, but why buy something produced in a factory and shipped thousands of miles when you can whip up cute, DIY planters from reclaimed materials instead? Here are some ideas to get you going!

1. Tin Can Planter – This project from Wednesday is probably the simplest DIY planter you can make.

2. Colander – Actually, this colander planter might be simpler, since the drainage holes are already there! For indoors, definitely put a tray underneath to catch water and dirt that drains out when you water.

3. Funnel – How stunning is this repurposed funnel planter?

4. Bird cage – Bird cages are so sweet, and I love how Flickr user melingo wagamama jazzed up the one above to use it as a planter.

5. Mason jar – Got an old Mason jar handy? Check out how to use an upcycled spoon to turn it into a hanging planter!

6. Upside down planter – Transform an old two-liter bottle into an upside down tomato planter.

7. Produce bag planter – Next time you have a mesh produce bag around the house, you can turn it into a sweet hanging plant bag.

8. Tool box planter – Got an old toolbox? Turn it into a window box for herbs or flowers!

9. Tire planter – Mount a reclaimed tire or two on the fence, and you can plant flowers in the well.

10. Pallet vertical garden – Turn a salvaged wood pallet into a vertical succulent garden.
