Celebrate Pride with something handmade!
Happy Pride! Thanks to Pride, June is my third favorite month of the year, and I am ready to celebrate it with all things rainbow. Below, check out a round-up of all my favorite handmade Pride projects, from decorations to party supplies to the cutest fancy treats!
Felt Rainbow Bookmark
This cute project uses up the tiniest of your felt scraps, and since it’s glued and not sewn, it would work as a party craft or even a take-home party favor. If you’re okay with crafting with wool, I highly recommend wool felt for its superior structure and hand. Recycled polyester felt is also an eco-friendly choice for those who don’t craft with animal materials.
Crocheted Earrings
These earrings are cute and colorful, and since they’re made of yarn they’ll be light to wearing during a full day of celebration. Customize them with your own flag colors to make them more personal!
Collar Pin
Since you paint the rainbow onto the pin, this is a chance to use up some of your stash polymer clay in your less preferred colors. If you don’t have polymer clay on hand, instead of buying it new, look around your closest arts and crafts reuse store. Buying secondhand makes anything more eco-friendly!
Rainbow Arch Building Toy
This project is a labor of love, and will require some woodworking skills, as well as the ability to source hardwood of the correct width, but the result is an heirloom quality children’s toy that will last for generations past this Pride month. Although the tutorial creates arches that are 1/2″ wide, the author notes that the two largest arches did eventually break, so the updated suggestion is to make them 5/8″ wide.
Rainbow Challah
It’s festive and delicious! For a more eco-friendly challah, use natural food coloring.
Tissue Paper Fascinator
This is a quick and easy craft that will give you the perfect accessory for Pride–as long as it doesn’t rain! You could get a similar look with tulle or well-starched cotton fabric.
Stacked Cardboard Hearts
This is a terrific process-oriented art project for even the littlest Pride celebrants, and since it’s made entirely of upcycled cardboard it’s super eco-friendly.
Rainbow Hummus
My favorite part of this recipe is that adding the rainbow colors actually makes the hummus even healthier. We all need more beets, spinach, and carrots in our diet!
Heart-Shaped Paper Chain
This is the cutest decoration, and one that I’d honestly leave up all year! You could sub magazine pages for the construction paper called for, or even paint your own cardstock with acrylics or tempera.
Rainbow Quilted Greeting Cards
I send these sweet quilted greeting cards out on all occasions, but Pride is a particularly perfect holiday for them. If you want to save a little money on stamps, make this project as a postcard, instead.
Quilted Pride Flag
This strip quilt comes together easily, and it’s an economical use of fabric considering its size, since each color requires only one fat quarter’s worth of fabric.
Crocheted Progress Pride Flag
There are tutorials for several iterations of this Pride flag on the author’s site, so you can customize your flag to promote your favorite message. Cotton yarn is more eco-friendly, but acrylic yarn (especially if you can thrift it!) is better for all-weather outdoor display.
Paper Spinner
This craft project is a fun activity for kids… AND a sneaky science demonstration! These spinners also make lovely decorations when hung outside on a breezy day.
T-shirt Yarn Storage Basket
T-shirt yarn is a wonderful way to upcycle old T-shirts, and it’s easy to collect a rainbow assortment of yarn colors. You can use this cheerful storage tote year-round, or modify the pattern to make yourself a out-and-about tote that’s perfect for Pride parades and summer festivals.
Tie-Dye
Tie-dye is perfect for Pride AND for summer! If you’re a first-timer, the beginner’s kits found at most big-box craft stores work great. If you’ve got lots of tie-dying planned, you can buy the supplies more cheaply in bulk.
