10 Eco-Friendly Crafts for Pi Day

Celebrate Pi Day with all the best handmade decorations, dishes, outfits, and party favors!

A few weeks ago, I asked a friend what he had planned for Valentine’s Day. He said, “Nothing,” I said, “GASPETH WHYEVER NOT?!?!” while giving him evil eyes (Chat, he’s married!), and then he had the nerve to say, “Eh, Valentine’s Day is a made-up holiday.”

Okay, first of all, Valentine’s Day is literally NOT a made-up holiday. It’s the feast day of Saint Valentine, who was clubbed to death! Or maybe beheaded. Possibly both? Hagiography can be a little loose sometimes, ahem.

But second of all, and MUCH more importantly–every holiday is made-up! The Feast Day of Saint Valentine is no more written in Life’s Instruction Manual than is Halloween or Solstice or Pi Day, which I, personally, celebrate with just as much fanfare as all of those, and frankly, with a lot more fanfare than the boring holidays like the 4th of July or Thanksgiving. Nationalism and forced turkey consumption have nothing on scary movies, the return of reasonable sunset times, and PIE!!!

Here, then, because obviously I’m already planning this year’s Pi Day celebration and exactly what flavors of pie I will consume during it, are my favorite projects to celebrate March 14, commonly known as Pi Day. It is my fourth favorite holiday of the year, because it celebrates two of my favorite things: pie and math!

Appliqued Onesie

The tutorial includes a free downloadable template that you can use to create either a freezer paper stencil or a fabric applique. As-is, it’s perfectly sized for a onesie, but upscale it and anyone can have Pi decor on their clothes! I LOVE this author’s idea of matching the applique on the onesie to the pair of pants she also sewed for this outfit.

Crocheted Digits of Pi Bunting

Use all the crocheted numbers tutorials and the period from the crocheted punctuation tutorials to go as far down the digits of Pi as you want, then thread them onto fishing line or more yarn and you’ll have the coolest–and most mathematically interesting!–decoration!

Knitted Pi Scarf

It’s a gamble where I live whether or not you’ll still need a scarf by the middle of March, but fortunately, Pi is a classic that’s suitable to wear all winter. Use any bulky yarn in two contrasting colors for this project, and when you’re done, make the matching hat!

DIY Pi Puzzle

Did you know that you can make your own puzzle graphics just by turning a completed puzzle over to the blank back and painting it with watered-down acrylics and paint pens? And the front side stays pristine, so you’ve basically got two puzzles for one! A round puzzle is perfect for upcycling into a fun Pi Day activity.

Pi Pie Felt Pin

This is the cutest little pie, and you can wear it! For the most eco-friendly felt, use 100% wool felt or visit your local creative reuse store for second-hand polyester felt. After that, it’s all easy hand-stitching!

Pie Chart Pie

Your three favorite flavors of pie all get to live in harmony on Pi Day! For the most mathematical deliciousness, dispense the fillings as an accurate pie chart, and of course make pie crust cookies with the leftover crust.

Pi Belt

Here’s another accessory that you can wear all year! This is a great excuse to learn how to use transfer paper, and if you’re feeling even more adventurous, it’s also a great excuse to learn how to make a simple belt out of cotton webbing.

Pi Day Handouts

If you thought class valentines were fun, then why not keep those good vibes going? These free printable Pi Day handouts would be especially cute when accompanied by small, handmade gifts or treats. Everybody loves a pipe cleaner Pi!

Pie Bottlecap Magnets

This is a fun way to upcycle bottlecap and all your teeny-tiny felt scraps. If you don’t have the perfect color of felt, try thin cardboard food packaging. Embellish with seed beads or sequins!

Pi Paper Embroidery

Embroidery onto cardstock or thin cardboard is an accessible beginner’s hand-sewing project, but it’s very fun for everyone! This particular finished project was framed, but I think that it would look lovely as a greeting card front.
