How-to: Fancy Up a Necktie with Applique

DIY Bird Tie Finished
Don’t you just love the necktie section of the thrift store? The one I frequent most is always full of a fun mix of throwback patterns, cheesy characters, and some more modern designs. It’s those throwback ties that really speak to me, and sometimes I can’t resist snagging a couple, even if I don’t know what I’m planning to do with it. In conclusion, I have a huge stack of neckties, and I bet that a lot of you have at least one old tie laying around that needs a little makeover.

With Father’s Day and graduations coming up, a modded-out necktie is a perfect gift to have handy, and it’s easy as pie to dress up a thrifted necktie with a custom applique made from recycled felt! Since ties are pretty narrow, this is also a great project for felt scraps that you might have saved up.

As you can see in the photo above, I went with a lovebird tie for my sweetie, but you could do any design you like. The more personal for your giftee the better!
