My stocking was one of my favorite aspects of Christmas. Hanging it over the chimney fills me with such joy, even to this day. The traditional synthetic stockings you can find in stores, though, are boring and not very eco-friendly. Something as special as a stocking should be handmade! It’ll be passed down through the generations and cherished forever. Here are five Christmas stocking tutorials using different types of recycled fabrics and materials.

1. Denim Stocking

Just Kat Stuff shows us how to make a stocking out of old jeans. Denim is sturdy and will last a long time. Plus, the top and lining have endless possibilities when it comes to patterns and colors.

Our very own Julie Finn gives us a great tutorial on making a felted sweater stocking. Your local thrift store is chock full of Christmas theme sweaters that would be perfect for this project.

Even though I try my hardest to remember my reusable bags, I seem to be most forgetful around the holidays. Consequently, Rock Scissor Paper shows us how to make a stocking using the pretty holiday paper bags from the local grocery store. Make miniature versions to package goodies to give to friends.

4. Recycled Yarn Stocking

Taking an old sweater that you don’t wear anymore and turning it into yarn is an easy and eco-friendly solution to acquiring yarn for a project. On Crafting a Green World, there is an article that outlines how to do just that. With recycled yarn in hand, whip up some of these cute mini stockings from Little Cotton Rabbits. if you don’t have a fireplace, string them up for a nice wall decoration instead.

5. T-Shirt Stocking

Your local thrift store is never out of old t-shirts that can be used to make a number of crafty things. This YouTube video shows us how to make yarn out of a cotton t-shirt. Then use your t-shirt yarn to make this stocking from The Art of Crochet by Teresa. There is even a video of the tutorial if you’re more of a visual learner.
