Upon window gazing in San Francisco, this immense coral yarn sculpture reminded me of one of the most unique, and unusual TED Talks I’ve ever seen and it’s about coral yarn crochet. In this TED (Technology and Entertainment Design) talk, Margaret Wertheim shares the coral project she started with her twin sister that is all about crocheting the coral reef.
The idea of this yarn filled coral sculpture garden is inspired by endangered sea coral, the ancient art of domestic handicrafts, and the new discoveries in mathematics by Dr. Daina Taimina on the beautiful math of coral.When you feel like watching something both unusual and educational then check out this beautiful TED talk about Crocheting to Save Endangered Sea Coral that we’re talking about. Conceptual, contemporary, environmental art at it’s best, I’m in awe of this creative collective of crafters.
Ideas like this inspire new “knitting and crocheting for a cause” movements. In this project and traveling exhibition, there are so many types of unique sea corals to explore. The idea of knitting little colorful, and textural coral specimens into art, that’s both sculptural and wearable is exquisite.

Haaahaa maybe if you’re mopping up bright red dye Rose. Each one is actually completely different. The first image is not part of the project, yet the screen-shots from the video show the diversity of crocheted corals on display.
