Do you have a stack of empty gift cards from holiday gift-giving? Don’t toss them out! Cut them into tiny pieces and use them in a clever gift card mosaic.
Gift cards are the PERFECT holiday prezzie, in my opinion. But what do you do with all that plastic once the balance is used up? Lots of places say they’ll recycle them for you. But I’ve seen way too many retailers toss them into the trash – right in front of me! So I don’t trust the whole “recycle” song and dance. The best I can do is work them into a craft project. And I think a gift card mosaic is the way to go!
Gift Card Mosaic
+ craft paint
+ foam brush
+ number stickers (2016)
+ gift cards
- Because I like to re-use my canvases, I find one that needs a little inspiration and then give it 2-3 coats of craft paint until the old artwork is covered. Let this dry completely before moving onto the next step.
- Gather all your USED gift cards and cut them into random shapes. I like to cutaway any wording that’s on the cards so that I can use only the colored parts. But you can do whatever you wish. And instead of cutting the cards into small shapes that look like broken bits, you can also cut everything the exact same shape. That looks really cute too!
- Place you stickers on the canvas to read: 2016. If you don’t have stickers, just paint on the 2016.
- Dab a small amount of glue onto the back of each mosaic piece and carefully place it on the canvas. You can do random patterns are simply surround the numbers like I did.
Be sure to let everything dry completely before hanging!
This mosaic looks adorable as the centerpiece for a New Year’s party. But obviously, you don’t have to do something New Year’s related. You can also use your gift cards to mosaic small frames, tabletops or cell phone cases.
