You need perfect squares to create pinwheels, and the easiest way to do this is to fold your paper over at an angle, like so:
Then trim off the excess, like this:
You’re left with a perfect square of paper! Now you just need to trim about 1/3 of the way down each corner of the paper, toward the center, so that your paper looks like this:
Once all of the trimming is done, it’s time to fold! This part can be a little bit crazy-making, and we discovered a method that takes a lot of the cussing out of folding your pinwheel.
