How-to: Upcycled Cork Pirate Ships

Cut Cork

You don’t want your pirate ship to be all roly-poly, so grab your serrated knife, and slice off part of your cork lengthwise, creating a flat bottom. You don’t want to slice the cork all the way in half. Just cut off the bottom 1/8 or so, like in the photo above.

Now, you’ll need to cut out the flags. Grab your security envelope and cut out three rectangles:

  • 1 1/8″ x 5/8″
  • 1 1/2″ x 7/8″
  • 1/2″ x 1 1/2″

The first two are for your main mast, and that last rectangle is going to be the ship’s front pennant.

Making Pennant

To make the pennant, fold your 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ piece of paper in half, so you’re left with a rectangle that’s 1/2″ x 3/4″. Use your ruler to find the center of the 1/2″ side of the rectangle on the open half (not along the fold, but opposite it). Then, use your scissors to cut a line on each side of your rectangle from that center dot to the diagonal corner. You’ll be left with a folded over triangle.
