Carnival of Green Crafts #1

carnival of green crafts

Welcome to the first Carnival of Green Crafts!

For more information about the Carnival, please see the Carnival of Green Crafts home page here at Crafting A Green World.

We’re pleased as punch to announce that the next Carnival will be August 9th at BlogHer, courtesy of Hobbies, Crafts & DIY Contributing Editor Debra Roby. Send in your posts via the carnival submission form today!

Thanks so much to all the crafters who shared their posts with us for this Carnival.  Let’s dig in!

Finding Inspiration

Inspired by thoughts of children possibly eating their vegetables, Wendy created these lovely edible Seed Sprouting Kits, posted at her blog Wisdom of the Moon.

Colleen of Some Art Fabric Talk got inspired on a rainy afternoon and cut up old thrifted textbooks to make an Insect Window Shade with her daughters. Talk about inspiration to look through the books more carefully the next time I’m thrift shopping!

The blogger at Monkey Giggles found inspiration in 12 pairs of jeans that didn’t fit, turning them into a fabulous denim couch cover and cushions. Honestly, this looks way better than my store-bought slipcover ever did.

Natrual Dye with plum skinsBree of Hot Tea Apparel didn’t have to go much further than her backyard for inspiration to create some cutie pie mini furniture and a piece of wall art.  Talk about crafting locally…

Leslie here at Crafting A Green World had to go a little further (next door, to be precise) to come up with ingredients for making Natural Non Toxic Dye.

Paper Talk

Tiffany wrote a great post on eco-scrapbooking called Scrapping Green, posted on the Natural Family Living Blog.

CraftyLyra was inspired by a quilter friend to organize her paper scraps so she could use even small pieces of paper instead of throwing them out. She shared her organizing system for paper scraps a week later.

Penny of Pennamite created Street flotsam collage pages from “paper trash found during an hour’s walk in the neighborhood.”

Colleen of Some Art Fabric Talk is finding that practice makes awesome recycled paper. The cards she made out of it are absolutely striking.

Waste Not, Want Not

Yoel made a great list of what to do with little bits of yarn as part of her Stashbusting series.  Her New Year’s Resolution for 2008 was to use up her entire stash, and she’s kept track in her sidebar as she goes through it all.

glass tumblersSasha Bobylev wrote about What to do with the empties? posted at American Winery Blog, since he lives in an area without glass recycling.

Here at Crafting A Green World, Kelly also got showed us a few ways that Glass Bottles Turn Useful Again, including these great glasses from Etsy seller Bottlebottoms.

Once you’ve disposed of your bottles, check out How to Make a Wine Glass Chandelier on Condo Blues. The supplies for this craft are definitely thriftable if you don’t have mismatched wine glasses already.

The Meaning of Crafts

Elaine Lipson of Red Thread Studio wrote Quilts of Soul, Strength, and Scarcity about a new Gee’s Bend exhibit. I liked her take on it, her recognition of how much creativity can be infused into even the most practical of objects made with only reused and recycled materials.  It doesn’t take fancy new fabric and a computerized sewing machine to make something beautiful.

Elaine has also written a lot about what she calls Slow Cloth. If you haven’t read about it before, start with her post 10 Qualities of Slow Cloth to learn more.

Dressing Up

Nancy McCarroll tried out Sewing a Woman’s Shirt from a Man’s Shirt with some help from a vintage tablecloth and posted the results on her blog Nancy’s Arts, Crafts and Favorites.

Thrift Store Scores

Cross Stitch Ninja shows off a sassy reusable bag made of thrifted fabric in Reuse, redo, recycle at Radical Cross Stitch.

Grace of What if No One’s Watching posted a MAJOR thrifting score.  Scroll down in her post Bounty to see what she found.  Girlfriend doesn’t even KNIT!  But if you do, you might end up with a good deal on EBay here.

See You Next Time!

That’s it for the first Carnival of Green Crafts.  Thanks again to all the crafters who sent posts, and we invite anyone reading this to follow their lead and show off your fabulous green crafting ideas.  We love hearing from everyone.

If you’re interested in hosting the carnival, also let us know!

Peace,
The Crafting A Green World Team
