It’s a Tote, Tote, Tote, Tote, World

organic tote On top of all my various journals, I own way too many tote bags. Accumulation can happen fast. One too many conferences and craft fairs and bam! you have a closet over-flowing with totes.

It’s a good thing really, enabling you to BYOB (bring your own bag) on any numerous shopping excursions.

On one such recent shopping excursion to everyone’s favorite big box store, Target, I found another green offering to the tote world. Made of 100% organic materials, the cute market tote is available with sassy slogans like “Kiss me I’m Organic” and “I don’t do Plastic.”

While not hand made, it is refreshing to see organics and other eco-friendly materials and products making it to the mainstream. And with any of the Fabulous Fabrics, the totes could easily be recreated. Try using either of these projects. Just add your own eco slogan.

“DIY or Die!” anyone?

  1. Most of my reusable shopping totes started life as a freebie totebag/backpack with a corporate logo on it. Usually I use them as-is for shopping and trips to and from the library. But one of the the nicer ones (well, they would be cuter if they didn’t have a big logo plastered on the side) I made into more everyday totes buy covering the logo with a punch needlpoint design I made and didn’t know what to do with. I get a lot of compliments on it. It’s one of my favorite totes now.

  4. I love the fact that most stores now accept people bringing their own bags. There was a big exception to that recently. I went to the Staples store in Monroe Michigan and purchased several items. At the start of the order I set my very nice bag (made it myself) on the counter and told the cashier that I brought my own bag. She just said ‘ok’. Rang up my order and took my money. While I was distracted putting away my change THINKING my order was being bagged, she slid it out of her way and went onto the next customer. I asked if she was going to bag my order, and she said ‘No, I’m not. You brought your own bag.’ Shocked, I bagged my order and went in search of the manager. I found the Asst Manager on duty and told him what happened. His response? ‘That’s fine. She doesn’t have to.’ WHAT??? He rolled his eyes at me and said ‘I know with Earth Day people are bringing their own bags, but we have our own bags with our store name on it for you to use, and we’ll bag your order if you use ours!!’ I went home and called their customer service line. They sounded as shocked as I was, apologized and assured me the store manager would contact me about the incident and how it will be handled in the future. Did they? HA! I was told it might be as long as 10 days.. for a phone call??? Well, it’s been almost a month. Nothing. Thinking it over, if this ever happens again ANYWHERE I will demand a refund on all items on the spot. This isn’t the first time this has happened. Several months ago I was also told by a cashier at a local produce market she COULDN’T bag my order because she wasn’t trained on that kind of bag!!!! What is wrong with people????

  7. I recycle my plastic grocery bags into crotched market bags. I turn the sacks into “plarn” and crotchet away!!! I can’t believe the crappy attitude I’ve gotten sometimes for using my own bags, mostly by people that probably just want to go home and be done for the day, but I do have to say thank goodness it doesn’t happen very often. have a groovy day…~S
