How to: Make a Tank Top from a T-Shirt

Yesterday, I posted a tutorial on how to make a skirt using an adult t-shirt. The same method can be used to make a shirred tank top. Here is how:

The steps to make this tank top are the same as the skirt from yesterday so refer to that post for detailed instructions.

But briefly, the steps are as follows:

Cut the shirt under the arm pit, across the chest.

You will be left with a rectangular piece like this. The larger the t-shirt you start with, the longer the length will be.

Shir as many rows as you want, depending on the size of the t-shirt. I made eight rows for this tank top.

With the scrap fabric from the t-shirt, make a small fabric rosette, using any method you like and hand stitch the rosette on top of the tank top.

Add two straps made from the scraps (I made these by cutting out the already finished hemmed sleeves) and Ta Dah! You made a tank top!

Was that easy or what?

  1. This is so pretty! I’m usually not a fan of chopping up tshirts as a lot of customizing techniques for them give a really gappy, frayed look (cool if you like that, but just not my thing), but this is a truly lovely one 🙂

  2. on the third picture I didn’t understand what to do…”Shir” means what exactly? is it just straight stitches you did? It’s a great looking project that I can’t wait to try out 🙂
