Fab Fabrics: Oliver Henry Organics

These vintage-inspired prints from Etsy seller Oliver Henry Organics are rocking my socks!

Designer Melissa Swansey Nicholson lives on Martha’s Vineyard with her husband and two “very wild” boys, ages two and four. She relates the story of how her business got started:

Both my husband and I grew up here and returned after college, got married and built a great little cottage. I have been drawing and doodling since, well, forever and got my BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Because I married and had kids rather young I fell out of the creative world for too long. I started collecting vintage tablecloths and aprons after using them in my wedding and became a little obsessed, they are what has inspired my designs. Oliver Henry are my boys (Wyatt & William) middle names. I am thankful for websites like Etsy which give us stay at home mothers a chance to be creative and run a small business from home.

Melissa’s cotton and wool fabrics are all GOTS certified organic. She says that she sticks to all organic materials because, “I have to know that my business is about more than profit, I have to feel good about what I am doing.” When sourcing materials from abroad, she also makes certain that they are fair trade.

In addition to her beautiful organic cotton prints, I’m really digging this organic Make Your Own Blanket kit. The kit includes 100% organic merino wool and a selection of her own fabric so that you can make your very own eco-friendly, oversized toddler blanket. If you’re not in the sewing mood, she has finished throws listed, as well.

You can find Melissa’s fabrics in the Oliver Henry shop at Etsy. She offers discount prices when you order multiple yards or the option to have the designs printed on 100% organic cotton interlock knit! She’ll even alter the colors of her designs to your specifications, if you want them in a different colorway.

  1. I love these, and the make-your-own-blanket kit is a great idea. It’s great to see the choice in organic fabrics getting bigger and bigger.
