After experimenting with three different types of natural glue for stiffening fabric I wanted to make something I’ve been meaning to try for some time.
A Crochet Lace Necklace.
I’m sure you’ve seen these chic vintage-y crochet necklaces everywhere. It is the vintage-come-modern look and it goes with everything. You can dress it up or down. All you need to make this dainty necklace are a little bit of jewelry making skill, (using pliers with jump rings,) an old lace scrap, and a necklace chain, preferably from a thrifted necklace.
Let’s get glammed!
Supplies:
- Lace
- Natural Glue/Stiffening Method of your choice – corn starch is translucent so it’s good for colored lace like this one.
- Necklace Chain
- Pliers
- Plastic Tray or a plate for drying
Instruction:
Cut out an ornate pattern from your lace pile with a pair of small scissors with sharp points. You’ll need the sharp points for cutting around the intricate corners and curves.
You can use any pattern but I chose the floral bouquet for my necklace because there are holes on either side that I can use to hook the jump rings for the chain.

Nice project, and it’s cool to see how the stiffener works. I’m a little confused where the crochet comes in though. Did I miss it?
Sorry, the title is a little confusing. The necklace works with any type of lace but since crochet lace is a little heavier, it works best for this necklace. But you can use any type of lace. Hope that helps.
That makes sense. It looks like the lace in the photos is netted/embroidered lace, that ‘s what confused me.

When I read this, I had two thoughts: my wedding gown is all lace. Even though I’m divorced, I love the lace and just can’t throw it out: Now I can do lots of things…head-band, enhance the lace with tiny pearls, crystals, sequins (but not too much). Maybe a brooch( add a fabric back and stuffing and/or stiff facing fabric), I can think of at least 10 other things to make! My second thought/memory: in my first year of Nursing School, we wore “Probie Caps”–we were given a rectangular piece of linen with a “probie” blue band on it. We’d soak it in starch and water and paste it to the mirror in our room. When dry, peel it off glass and fold and straight-pin it into the assigned shape! After our first year, we traded it in for the official cap of the school of nursing I attended and graduted from!
