One Dozen Pretty Things to Sew for Halloween

Halloween crafts from recycled materials: bunting

There are so many Halloween things to sew to make your holiday fancier and more festive.

Y’all know that I love myself a holiday quilt, but there is WAY more to sew for Halloween then just quilts to hide behind while you watch scary movies–although those are important, too! From decorations to trick-or-treating accessories to non-costumey things to wear, your sewing machine can stay busy all October.

Here are some of my favorite, festive, non-quilt things to sew for my favorite holiday. YOUR next favorite sewing project is probably on this list, too!

Quilted Halloween Bunting

This festive bunting is a lot more effort than the simple applique buntings that also get the job done, but the extra work is worth it here, because this bunting is SO special! There’s binding, piecing, a real quilted skull–just look at all the details!

Candy Corn Table Runner

This is the perfect piece to set on the hall table under the bowl full of candy ready for trick-or-treaters, or to decorate the buffet table holding all the snacks for your Scary Movie Night. I have a long coffee table, and my favorite low-key decorating hack is to top it with a festive table runner like this. I love that you don’t need Halloween prints for it–if you’ve got some oranges, yellows, whites, and blacks in your stash, you’re all set!

Jack-o-Lantern Pillow

This pillow is such a festive way to decorate for Halloween, and it sews up super quickly, too, with the main embellishment work being simple applique shapes. If you’re working with kids, let them cut out, or at least draw, the Jack-o-lantern shapes and you’ll also have a sweet heirloom. Double-sided fusible interfacing is your best friend here!

Pumpkin Stuffies

This is a beginner-friendly project that eschews complicated techniques for simple work-arounds. The cording that you use to make the pumpkin indents will nearly disappear if you match it to the fabric color. Use your finished stuffies as decorative pillows, or give them to someone who wants something soft to snuggle!

Spiderweb Table Topper

A table topper is such a fun way to add a festive element to your decorating. To make it even MORE festive, make duplicates in miniature to serve as placemats or mug rugs!

Trick-or-Treat Pillowcase

Nothing spells Halloween success quite like a trick-or-treat bag so heavy you can barely carry it back home. Using the easy magic pillowcase method and some novelty prints, you’ll have all the candy you can carry in no time!

Jack-o-Lantern Trick-or-Treat Bucket

Okay, fine, maybe you don’t want the biggest possible candy receptacle–maybe you want one that looks just like the iconic plastic bucket without, you know, the plastic! This cute sewing pattern shows you how to make a stitched version of that junky plastic tote in the fabric of your choice. If you use novelty prints in Halloween themes, you could even get away with omitting the Jack-o-lantern faces!

Quilt Block Tote Bag

Okay, I know I said that I wouldn’t have quilts in this round-up, but y’all, I LOOOOOVE quilting! I’ve got to sneak it in somewhere! And anyway, this isn’t a proper quilt, ahem. It’s a tote bag made using quilt blocks. Halloween quilt blocks, to be exact!

Treat Bags

These little Halloween-themed treat bags are a fun way to pass out extra-special treats to your extra-special trick-or-treaters. They make especially good party favor bags, since you can divvy up a few different kinds of snack-sides treats inside.

Witch Hat

There are a LOT of witch hat sewing patterns out there, both free and paid, but y’all, this free witch hat pattern is the best. Look at those perfect proportions! Look at that beautiful brim! It’s by far my favorite, and the one I pull out every October.

Spiderweb Skirt

This is the bounding version of a Halloween costume, which means that you can wear it all month! This is a suitable project for a confident beginner, but if you’ve got the sewing skills, consider upgrading the fabrics to a cotton skirt and cotton or linen spiderweb.

Skeleton Stuffie

These little skeletons are a cute way to ease down the spook level on a young kid’s Halloween. How can you be scared of skeletons, when this one is SOOOOOO cute?!?
