How to Make a Backpack from Old Jeans for Back to School

Is your kiddo getting ready to head back to school in the next few weeks? Here’s how to make a backpack out of an old pair of jeans.

Stocking up on school supplies can be a little bit overwhelming, can’t it? Those lists can be so long! All of those supplies mean packaging, resources and money spent. Here’s how to make a backpack to save yourself some back to school cash and reduce the impact from all of those school supplies.

April at Coolirpa created this video showing you how to turn a pair of old jeans into a new backpack for back to school. You can grab the step-by-step for how to make a backpack from the video below, and we have a materials list below the video for you.

Denim Backpack Materials List

The size of your DIY backpack is going to depend on the size of your jeans. If you’re hitting the thrift for jeans, choose the biggest ones that you can find!

  • old pair of jeans
  • zipper
  • sewing machine, thread, pins, etc
  • fabric paint (optional)

Of course, that backpack might feel a little bit empty without school supplies to fill it up! How about stashing a reusable snack bag and a mini notepad into your kid’s new homemade backpack?
