Is your jewelry collection getting a little bit out of hand? Mine, too. What I love about my hanging DIY jewelry storage is that it’s budget friendly and it keeps my jewelry stash off of my dresser or bathroom counter. Hurrah for vertical storage!

I found the hanging fruit basket that I used for this project at a garage sale, but you can also hunt for one at a thrift store or other second-hand store. Or maybe you have one that wasn’t working in your kitchen but you couldn’t bear to part with.

Wherever you found it, dust that sucker off, and let’s make a DIY hanging jewelry organizer!

DIY Jewelry Storage from a Fruit Basket

low VOC spray paint

spray polycrylic (optional)

Directions

1. Clean your fruit basket. If it was hanging in a kitchen or on the ground at a yard sale, you’ll want to clean it with a homemade all purpose cleaner. The cleaner will help cut through any dirt or grease that the basket might have collected in a kitchen environment. If you don’t clean it properly, your paint might not adhere very well to the basket. Let it dry completely after you’ve sprayed, scrubbed, and rinsed.

2. Spray paint it! I recommend hanging your basket on a tree limb or even a clothes hanger to paint the basket fully. As I always say, make sure you spray thin, light coats to get the perfect spray paint job! One heavy coat will give you drips.

3. (Optional) I always finish my projects with a spray Polycrylic. Polycrylic is a water based sealer, but it isn’t the greenest craft supply. However, the paint on the project always lasts longer when I use Polycrylic. Paint has a tendency to chip, especially with metal (like this hanging fruit basket), so I definitely used Polycrylic for this project. Even so, the choice is completely yours!

4. Add your jewelry! You can even hang earrings on the edge of the baskets or through the links of the hanger portion!
