DIY Scrabble tile magnets are one of the easiest craft projects in the world, and happily, they also look amazing! They’re my favorite kind of magnet to have on the fridge, especially when you use a magnet back strong enough that your Scrabble tile magnets can actually hold things, not just look cute.

You will need:

Scrabble tilesYou can score whole sets of these for a song in any thrift shop in the country. If I’d wanted to, I could have bought three more sets at the couple of garage sales that I stopped at this morning (instead, I bought a lap desk, a filthy tackle box, and a Barbie car).

super glue. This is the make-it-or-break-it supply for this craft. I HAVE had homemade magnets fall apart before, and even if they worked great for years beforehand, it still pisses me off every time. For this project, I’m using DAP RapidFuse, which I received for free from a marketer.

strong magnets. I used these exact magnets for this project. They’re *maybe* about half a millimeter wider than the Scrabble tile, but you’ll have more problems with a strong magnet that’s far smaller than the tile, and these are a good strength for holding the tile plus several papers to a sheet metal memo board.

The process could not be easier. Make sure that your Scrabble tiles are clean and dry, then put a small dab of glue on the back of the magnet, center the Scrabble tile face-up on top, and leave it to cure. You’ll want to do this on a surface where the completed magnets can cure undisturbed, so after a few minutes, your workspace will look like this:

The DAP RapidFuse that I used cures in 30 minutes, so I was able to rescue my table from its Scrabble tile invasion before dinner.

So right now I have all my magnets on the refrigerator, where I play with them more than actually use them to hold things. My dream, however, is to have a giant sheet metal memo board on one wall of my kitchen, and on that giant sheet metal memo board I want to have not only a set of Scrabble tile magnets, of COURSE, but also?

I SUPER want to put a full-sized graphic of a Scrabble board there, so that I can really play magnetic Scrabble on it!

I received a free sample of DAP RapidFuse, because I can’t write about something if I haven’t used it to almost glue my pinky finger to a Scrabble tile.

    1. I’d go for something middle-of-the-road. You want it to be strong enough to hold up papers, so stronger than your average fridge magnet, but I went overboard once and got magnets that were super strong, and I ended up tearing the Scrabble tile off of several of them, they clung so hard to the metal surface.
