After posting last week’s project, Upcycled Candle Holder into a Mini Easter Basket, I realized I completely skipped over St. Patrick’s Day! To get some inspiration, I visited Pinterest. I found an adorable St. Patrick’s Day banner tutorial from The Crafting Chicks that I loved! I especially liked the “leaves” of the shamrock that were made from hearts. Then, I remembered a post that I saw on TPcraft.com, where they made toilet paper rolls into hearts. Combining the two amazing projects, I came up with toilet paper roll shamrocks!
What You Will Need:
1. Toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls. The amount you will need varies on the amount of shamrocks you are going to make. For the two shamrocks that I made, I used almost 1 paper towel roll.
2. Scissors.
3. Hot glue gun/hot glue.
How To Do It:
1. Cut your toilet paper rolls into 1/2 inch strips.
2. Form them into hearts.
3. Make the stem. All you have to do is take one of your toilet paper strips and cut it at one end. I left my stem long until I put the entire shamrock together. I cut it a little shorter later on, but it’s up to you.
4. Glue everything together. I started by gluing the stem to the first “leaf” of the shamrock.
Then, I worked my way around like so:
Once you get everything glued together, it should look like this:
I also tried using only three “leaves” but I liked the four “leaves” better.
Other Options to Consider:
- Add green paper to the back of your shamrock to give it some color like we did with the Cardboard and Toilet Paper Roll Tree and the Toilet Paper Roll Christmas Lights.
- You could also add color by spray painting your toilet paper rolls like we did with the Christmas “Candle” Cover— just make sure you use a low VOC option spray paint!
- Make a shamrock banner like the project I mentioned before from The Crafting Chicks. Instead of using twine or ribbon, consider using hemp twine, an eco-friendly alternative.
These are so easy to make and this a great project to get the kids involved! Do you have other eco-friendly St. Patrick’s Day projects? Link your project up to our Green Crafts Showcase!
If those aren’t the cutest darn things. And right in time for St. Patty’s day! Thanks for the fantastic idea AND showing how to make them!
