Infused vodka can add a special twist to an average cocktail, but conventional booze isn’t the best choice for the planet. Instead of buying infused booze at the store, choose a good organic vodka and make your own infusion!
For this infused vodka recipe, I used purple basil from my garden, which is why the basil in the jar looks rather dark. If you can’t find purple basil, don’t fret! Green basil will work just as well. In fact, it would be fun to experiment with other sorts, like Thai basil or even try other herbs like mint or chocolate mint. The fun of making your own infusions is that you get to customize the final product, so have fun with it!
There are lots of good brands of organic vodka out there, and our sister site – Eat Drink Better – has a good roundup of eco-friendly vodkas that you can try. I am a big fan of Prairie Vodka. It’s pretty easy to find and not too pricey: my two favorite qualities!
Lemon-Basil Infused Vodka
Ingredients and Supplies
- 1 lemon, sliced into 1/4″ thick half-rounds
- 1/4 cup fresh basil
- 1 pint mason jar or two half-pints
- organic vodka of your choice
1. Place the sliced lemon and the basil into your mason jar, or divide them between the two jars, if you’re using half-pints.
2. Top off your jar with the vodka, and stick it in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours before using.
The longer you let your vodka sit, the strong the flavors will become, and you can steep your booze for up to three weeks. Just remove the lid every couple of days and see if it smells lemony and basily enough for you!
