There are a lot of benefits to making your own homemade chalk paint. You get the creative freedom to create chalkboard art in any color you want, of course. But my favorite upside to homemade chalk paint is that you can choose zero VOC paint as the base. That means fewer icky fumes! Yay!

Denise over at Salvaged Inspirations tried four popular homemade chalk paint recipes and ranked them from her least to most favorite. I am so glad that I don’t have to discover on my own that baking soda or unsanded grout chalk paint recipes are tough to work with. It sounds like the plaster of Paris recipe was OK. But her #1 pick for homemade chalkpaint was calcium carbonate.

Calcium carbonate is a powdered dietary supplement. It’s vegetarian, and you can find it easily online.

All that you need to make homemade chalk paint with calcium carbonate are:

+ zero VOC paint of your choice

+ calcium carbonate

+ water

You can read Denise’s very thorough reviews over at Salvaged Inspirations and get the instructions for making your own chalk paint at home. She says that the calcium carbonate recipe goes on just like store-bought chalk paint. You might feel a little sticker shock at the price of the bottle, but she says that the total cost of this homemade chalk paint is comparable to that of commercial chalk paints.
