Green Crafter Profile: Fallen Tree Limb Jewelry from Starlight Woods (and a giveaway!)

starlight woods earrings

Lisa Disciascio creates fresh, modern jewelry using reclaimed wood from fallen limbs. Each piece from her shop is more than a fashion statement – she uses felled branches from storm-damaged trees and transforms them into rings, pendants, and earrings. Her work has gotten a good deal of press lately, including a feature in the latest Real Simple magazine.

Lisa is giving away a $25 gift certificate to her Starlight Woods shop (giveaway deets are below), and she was also kind enough to answer a few questions about what she does and why she does it.

Crafting a Green World: How did you get started making jewelry?

Lisa DiSciascio: I started making jewelry last year, after the summer of 2011 after a summer of crazy storms, there were SO many downed trees and branches that I was determined to find a use for.

CAGW: Why fallen branches?

LD: I have always loved working with wood- particularly reclaimed wood- I love to take something that seems like a throw away and make it into something wonderful. With so many downed tree branches this seemed like the best choice at the time to recreate into something wonderful!

CAGW: Who is your crafty hero?

LD: My crafty hero, I have a couple, my mother of course, she has always been so innovative and is such an artist although she will never admit that herself. Also, my stepfather, I watched him my whole life take old worn out objects and turn them into wonderful useful items. When I had an idea about something to make- he would always help me figure out how to make it happen. Because of those to people, I see everything in life as an interesting challenge of innovation.

CAGW: Why is using reclaimed and eco-friendly materials important to you?

LD: I feel using eco-friendly materials should be important to everyone, I like to feel that I am doing my part where I can and still being as creative as possible. Re-claiming old pieces is a passion, I have always seen the beauty in old worn out pieces and love to bring them back to life.

  1. I love the Winnie the Pooh quote keychain! “Pooh’s Grand Adventure” is one of my favorite movies and that quote has helped get me through difficult finals when I feel hopeless. “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think!”

  2. Its hard to pick one item from the shop. I like the earrings and the pendants best. Thanks for the chance to win.

  3. oooh thanks for sharing all of this. I loved browsing through the website at all of the jewelry and such. it was tricky trying to decide on a favorite, but I’d probably choose the piece that says, “Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened. Dr. Seuss” =) Gosh I like so many of them! =)
thanks for entering me into the drawing too =)

  4. I would like to thank you for your extreme concern for the environment. It’s people like you, and with the little bit that you do, that will help preserve the earth and all it’s beauty. I love the “Good Morning Beautiful” pendant pictured above. Waking up in the morning, wearing that, great. Start to the day.

  5. It’s absolutely amazing how concerned you are for the earth. Very rare to find someone so dedicated to saving it. Thank you. I love the necklace pictured above, “Good Morning Beautiful Pendant”.
