Tutorial: Woven Button Coasters

Many crafters are creating new and unique ways to use vintage and collected buttons for both home decor and fun craft projects. I instantly thought of my mom when I saw these coasters. She has an enviable button stash ripe with various colors and sizes just waiting to be woven into useful coasters.

CraftStylish contributer Linda Permann, of Linda Made, created these gorgeous and simple woven button coasters. Linda used 81 4-hole buttons that were 3/8 inch size. She used three colors of embroidery floss to make a simple design.

To make your own button coasters:

  1. Weave 9 buttons together in a row as shown in the above picture.
  2. Repeat step 1 for all nine rows.
  3. Weave the rows together.

Follow Linda’s button coaster tutorial for the complete instructions and detailed pictures of each step. Linda’s coaster project was actually inspired by this button handbag.

  1. These coasters are absolutely fabulous! I do find that over years I’ve accumulated tons of somewhat unflattering buttons, but never thought they could be turned into such a simple yet stunning home accessory. Thanks for featuring this!

  2. Genius!!!!!!!!! I have so many friends right now who are finally settling down out of the bachelor or bachlorette lifestyle, but don’t want to fall into the same fashion groups as their parents…with dull coasters with only one purpose…protecting the tabletop…these are stylish too!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY
