3. Tracing
Another way to create a template is to trace directly from a design you like, directly onto the freezer paper. Then, iron the freezer paper, shiny side down onto a fabric you want to create the applique. Cut out the fabric, leaving about 1/4″ seam allowance around the applique. Fold the seam allowance over the freezer paper template, and sew the applique onto the surface of whatever you want the applique to be on, leaving a hole through which you can take out the freezer paper through. Then, sew the hole closed.

I’m in the UK, can I ask (without looking too ignorant!) what freezer paper is? 🙂
Freezer paper is a paper that’s lined with light plastic on the other side. Shiny plastic side is where you put your food and wrap it to freeze. But crafters found that the shiny side can be ironed onto fabric to make the paper adhere temporarily. So this applique technique works great! One major brand in the U.S. is called Reynolds but other companies make them too. Thanks for asking! 🙂
