How-to: Make a Kid Crown from Recycled Felt

Kid Crown Instructions

It’s super simple to make a crown for your kiddo! If you don’t sew, you can even use fabric glue to assemble the crown instead of sewing, though I can’t vouch for how a glued version will hold up to abuse over time. The elastic closure on this crown keeps it securely on your kid’s head, and that bit of stretch means he won’t instantly grow out of it.

Materials

  • recycled felt in two colors – your choice!
  • measuring tape
  • fabric scissors
  • fabric glue
  • 2″ long piece of 1/2″ elastic
  • sewing machine, pins

Directions

1. Measure your child’s head, and subtract 1″. My son’s head was about 15″ around (he’s a wiggler, so I had to settle for getting as close as I could), so my crown is going to be 14″ around, plus the elastic closure.

2. Cut out the crown shape out twice using your main felt color. I just did a simple, freehand zigzag here, but you could also draw it out on scrap paper to make a pattern. It depends on the look you want!

3. A crown is no fun without jewels! Use your contrasting color of felt to cut out jewels to adorn your kiddo’s crown! Use fabric glue to stick the jewels to one of the pieces of felt.

4. When the glue is dry, pin the other crown shape you cut out to the back of your adorned piece, and pin your elastic to the crown, sandwiching the elastic between the felt pieces to complete the crown’s loop. You want the elastic to overlap the felt by 1/2″ on each side.

5. Use your machine and to top stitch all the way around the outside of your crown.

6. Crown your little prince or princess!
