Fabulous Fabrics: Organic Cotton from Mod Green Pod

Mod Green Pod organic fabricVictoria has been profiling some great natural, organic, and recycled yarns for knitting and crochet in her Yearn-Worthy Yarns series. But when it’s time to sit down to the sewing machine, what’s a green crafter to do? Never fear, we’re here to help. We’re kicking off our Fabulous Fabrics series, and first up is organic cotton from Mod Green Pod.

Mod Green Pod creates 100% cotton organic fabrics for home decorating. The fabrics are silk-screened by hand with water-based non-toxic inks and finished without nasty chemicals. And did I mention they’re gorgeous? If you’ve seen the cover of this month’s Domino, of course, you already know that, because the cute fabric on the sofa is their Atticus print in green.

Their designs are drawn from nature, but they’re very sophisticated. My favorite is the Clara, a vine-inspired print available in chocolate, cream, or basil. The current fabric collection also includes several floral-inspired prints and stripes in five colorways.

If that’s not enough, Mod Green Pod has launched a line of kids’ fabric. It’s not on their website yet, but they sent us a little snapshot of the three prints.

Sisters-in-law Nancy and Lisa Mims founded Mod Green Pod to indulge in their love of design while keeping it sustainable. The green factor hasn’t kept their fabric and vinyl-free wallpaper collection from being recognized by tons of magazines, from body+soul and Dwell to Brides. On their blog, you can keep up with the latest news.

What’s the downside? The price. At about $100 per yard for the regular fabric, you may not be able to do a whole couch or roman shades for every window in your house. But a yard of 52 inch wide fabric goes a long way when used for accents, such as pillows or trim. The kids’ fabric sells for less, and they also offer a plain organic cotton canvas, which might come in handy for other crafty projects.

Mod Green Pod fabrics are available for retail customers at several locations around the U.S. and Canada, or shop online at Near Sea Naturals.

Who makes your favorite sustainable fabric? Let us know what you love and we just might feature it in the next installment of Fabulous Fabrics!
