Fab Fabrics: The Organic Mamas

stack of fabric Melissa Lovell started The Organic Mamas back in 2004 when she had her first baby and realized she didn’t want her child exposed to the chemicals associated with conventional fabrics.

Lovell, who goes by “Mama Mel” was looking for fabric options without toxins like flame retardants, chemicals, synthetic dyes. She says:

What happens to a lot of new parents happened to us – a new baby came into our lives and suddenly we were SO more aware of the amount of chemicals that were creeping into our lives, not to mention seeing the degradation of our environment from conventional farming techniques. We eat organic food, why not organic cotton??

When she discovered that sustainably dyed organic cotton addressed her concerns, she decided to help make those fabrics accessible to other folks trying to green their sewing, and The Organic Mamas was born.

Lovell isn’t a fabric designer, but she is a fabric lover and it really shows in the selection at The Organic Mamas. She features organic fabric designers we love like Mod Green Pod and Daisy Janie. Right now, she’s working on a collaboration with BIRCHseed, “using her clean and fresh hand blocked printed organic cotton to create the super-eco cushion…organic cotton cover and a compostable corn insert!”
