There’s lots to celebrate this week! So grab some Popsicle sticks and create a 4th of July craft for kids – and one for the history books.
It’s a big week! Our country is celebrating the 4th of July and a landmark ruling on same sex marriage. So how do we celebrate? Popsicles! And what do we do with those Popsicle sticks? Craft them into awesome flags!
Materials
- 8 Popsicle sticks per flag
- Craft paints: red, white, blue, silver, orange, yellow, green, purple
- Blue foamboard
- Scissors
- Glue
- Paint brushes
American Flag Directions
- Paint three Popsicle sticks red and three white.
- Paint one stick silver.
- Cut a small heart out of your blue foamboard. You could also do a star, but I can’t draw a star – so I went with the heart.
- When your sticks are dry, add glue to the top half of your silver stick – which will acts as your flag pole.
- Attach the red and white sticks to the glue to form a flag.
- Glue the heart (or star) onto the top left corner of your flag.
- Flip your flag over so you see the unpainted side. Now take a plain Popsicle stick and cut it to the length of your flag.
- Glue this piece to the underside of your flag so that it’s parallel to your flag pole. This piece will act as a brace and it’ll hold all the sticks together.
Pride Flag Directions
- Follow all the directions from the American Flag craft, but instead of red and white sticks – paint each one the colors of the rainbow.
- Be sure to glue them on in the proper order: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.
- I didn’t add a heart to the Pride flag, but I wish I had! I think that would’ve been really nice!
So what do we do with these flags?
- Stick the American flag in your flower pots to add to your 4th of July decor.
- Use this craft as a way to keep the kids busy at your 4th of July barbecue.
- Make both flags with your kids as a way to explain this week’s Supreme Court decision and why it’s a very special day for lots of crafty families!
