Craft Book Review: 51 Things to Make with Cardboard Boxes

My kids and I are pretty into this craft book series from Quarto, the most recent of which (still in pre-order for you guys, but safe and sound in our hot little hands!) is 51 Things to Make with Cardboard Boxes.

Like the other books in the 51 Things series, this book focuses on projects that kids, sometimes with adult help, can make from easy-to-find stuff around the house. Unlike 51 Things to Make with Cardboard Tubes, however, the projects in this cardboard box book can be a little more complicated, since unlike cardboard tubes, cardboard boxes come in an endless variety of shapes and sizes. Therefore, it’s best to 1) know exactly what project you want to create, then be on the lookout for boxes that fit that project, or 2) come to the book with a bunch of boxes at the ready, and be prepared to create whatever project fits what you’ve got.

But if you’ve got the boxes for it, you’ll again find a bunch of different projects to use them on, and surely something for any kid. Kids who like animal crafts can make giraffes, crocodiles, fish, butterflies, tigers, and more–this one has a LOT of animal crafts! Kids who like pretend play will enjoy the pirate hat, treasure chest, castle, and pirate ship. Kids who want to dress up can make glasses, a robot mask, or a bracelet. And although this book has fewer holiday decorations than the cardboard tube craft book, you can still make a Christmas tree or reindeer.

Extra supplies that you’ll need are pretty minimal, generally consisting of paint or colored paper. Googly eyes are always a plus, and a couple of tutorials call for straws, a supply that I don’t love but that I generally have a lot of success in replacing with sticks.

I received a free copy of 51 Things to Make with Cardboard Boxes, because I can’t write about a book unless it’s encouraged me to take ALL of my stuff out of its original packaging.
