DIY Graffiti Art…from the Heart!
My 7- and 9-year-old nephews made this DIY graffiti art for my 16-year-old niece. And it was perfect! The project was part art and part kid-friendly scavenger hunt!
The Team: 2 cousins, ages 7 and 9. Jordan and Harrington.
Their Mission: A sweet 16 birthday present for Jazlynn. (Jaz is Jordan’s big sister. She’s Harrington’s cousin.)
You’d think this was a recipe for disaster, right? Two boys trying to come up with a present for a 16-year old girl. WRONG! Their gift was and is perfect. The graffiti art they created for Jazlynn is absolutely beautiful. And it’s something she can hang in her room, in her dorm, in her own home one day – and think, “my little brother and my little cousin made that for me!”
Could I be more proud of these little craft monsters?!
Find the Paints
This is a total scavenge-project. All paints in your craft stash are fair game. And check the garage. There are sure to be some old cans of spray paint in there. You could also make use of a paint sprayer – but that’s definitely an adult-supervised activity.
Get Some Canvas and Try on Halloween Costumes
The one item you might have to purchase for this project is some canvas. But who says you can’t have a little fun at the craft store? Certainly not Jordan and Harrington. Canvas: check. Scary bunny head: check!
Get Inspired by Mother Nature
Jordan and Harrington grabbed sticks, leaves and whatever else they could find to help them with the painting. My Little brother (Jordan and Jaz’s dad, and Harrington’s uncle) says the boys really got into using their finds to create textures and shapes. LOVE THIS!
Don’t forget the Heart
Let’s be honest, even the most “abstract” or “busy” graffiti art instantly becomes a masterpiece if you spray paint a giant heart shape onto the canvas. What an awesome touch!
Sign it with Love
Don’t forget to sign and date your art. (Cue the song, “Memories” now.) And if you’re really into it, add a protective coat to the artwork once everything is dry. That way, it really will stay perfect forever!
I think Jazlynn is going to LOVE this present. It’s not even for me and I ADORE it! Yes, Harrington and Jordan – if you’re reading this – that’s a big hint!!!
Well done, boys.
Kudos to Uncle Sean for supervising.
And Happy Happy Sweet 16 to Jazlynn!
