She's a 104-Year-Old Guerilla Knitter

She's a 104-Year-Old Guerilla KnitterThe Yarrow Etttrick and Selkirk Arts Festival in the UK had a lot of pretty great stuff. There was a poetry contest. There were several art exhibitions. There was dance. There was photography. And festival attendees were treated to numerous examples of guerilla knitting, with yarn-bombed pieces to be found all over the area. These pieces, ranging from the whimsical to the more whimsical to the very, very, VERY whimsical, were completed by several street artists, including someone’s 104-year-old great-grandma.

The knitting club, yarn bombers, and guerilla knitters otherwise known as the Souter Stormers, including Grace Brett, who has six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and lives in a care home in Scotland, decorated landmarks around the festival. You can check out the gallery of their work, the people who were wowed by it, and a couple of the knitters, themselves, including photos of Ms. Brett, here.

We’ve been hearing a lot lately about older people who do good works by making things by hand. Remember the woman who sewed a new dress for a needy child every single day? The Jersey City senior citizens who knitted and crocheted blankets, scarves, and hats for an emergency shelter? That’s the kind of amazing work that I’m talking about, all being done by older people.

And how about you? What do you give from your hands? You, too, can sew a dress to send to a needy child. You can knit scarves and mittens and, guerilla knitter-style, leave them attached to trees and lampposts so that someone who needs them will see them and take them. You can make and toss seed bombs, if you think they work. You can make a busy box of activities for CASA kids.

And you don’t even have to be 100 years old to do those things.

Although, apparently, it helps!
