Upcycled Party Decorations Roundup

Yesterday, we made some upcycled pinwheel party decorations, and there are lots of other ways to deck out your soiree without all of the waste.

Whether you’re planning a birthday shindig, an anniversary, or just throwing a party for kicks, those decorations add up to a lot of waste. Paper streamers, bunting, pinatas and even signs directing your guests are usually a one-time-use situation, and then they head straight to the recycle bin or the landfill.

Of course, it’s a lot quicker to hit up the party store. Maybe 45 minutes to an hour of shopping, and your decorations are sorted. Handmade decorations take a bit more time, but they also add charm that those mass-produced goodies just don’t have. The key is planning ahead and making it fun! Don’t hole up by yourself. Instead, plan a craft night with friends or get your family involved in the crafty goodness.

Not sure where to begin? Here are some upcycled, party decoration ideas to get you going.

Of course, you don’t want to go to all of this trouble only to have other aspects of your party be super wasteful. Opt for reusable or truly compostable plates and flatware. Skip the paper napkins, and put out some pretty cloth ones instead. If you don’t have cloth napkins on hand, check the local thrift store. I’ve had really good luck finding cloth napkins at the one by me. You can also encourage your guests to carpool or take mass transit instead of driving solo.

Have you guys whipped up any of your own, upcycled party decorations? I’d love to hear more ideas in the comments!
