DIY for Dad: Father’s Day Crafts

DIY Bird Tie Finished

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and I’ve always found it hardest to create handmade gifts for the men in my life. Here are some projects to jumpstart your creativity this Father’s Day!

On average, we spend over $90 on Father’s Day gifts, usually at big box establishments for generic gifts. Rather than support these huge corporations, why not turn to your crafty stash and make your dad something fun and unique that he’ll treasure?

Necktie crafts are usually a safe bet for Father’s Day gifts, and of course you’ll need to whip up a handmade card to go along with your gift. Ready to get crafting?

Make a Recycled Tie Banner

Over at Dollar Store Crafts, Heather has a super nifty tutorial for turning a few thrifted neckties into a sassy tie banner that says “Dad.” My favorite part of this project is that instead of ribbon or seam binding, she used pieces of necktie to string her bunting. If you plan this right, you could make it a zero waste project! You can download the letter template and check out the tutorial in full over at Dollar Store Crafts.

Custom Necktie Applique

Turn a vintage tie into a personalized treasure! All you need are some recycled felt, a thrifted necktie, and you’re ready to go. You can make a bird, like in the photo above, or design your own applique that’s just for dad.

Make a Hanging Scissor or Tool Holder

This hanging scissor holder would be a perfect gift for a handy dad. You could even whip up a whole batch of these to stow his most-loved tools, like a wrench, screwdriver, or shears. For even smaller tools, you can use the skinny part of the tie to whip up a mini holder. This is another place where, with a bit of planning, you might be able to use the whole necktie and have zero waste at the end.

Origami Father’s Day Card

What gift is complete with out a sweet, sentimental card to go with it? The video tute above calls for new origami paper, but you can make your card using junk mail instead to green this project right up. Security envelopes would make an especially cool necktie and shirt, don’t you think? Especially if you mixed up a couple of different patterns.

So, spill it, crafty peeps! What projects do you have in the works for Father’s Day?
