Citizen Bag Monsters To Take Over Ghirardelli Square Thursday

Plastic Bag Monster

Today, 100 bag monsters, 50,000 plastic bags and upwards of 10 local organizations will rally in support of a Calfornian ban on plastic bags that will take place in San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square. This art and upcycled rally is in support of the state-wide ban of plastic bags that will be voted on in the coming days by the California State Senate.

Each citizen bag monster will be sporting 500 plastic bags, each which represents the number of plastic bags a typical individual uses in one year. ONE year. And somewhere between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. As for Californians, an estimated 19 billion plastic bags are used each year and many of which end up in the rivers and oceans causing major harm and damage to the Californian eco-system. A ban on plastic bags is one of the biggest single cuts Californians can make to reduce marine debris pollution.

After the rally, Andy Keller, the inventor of the plastic bag monsters, will embarque on a national tour, visiting 15 cities across the country that are considering implementing bag ban legislation. Keller will ride across the country on a three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle, dressed as a bag monster and host and participate in events in each city.

The rally and Keller’s cross country journey can be followed on his blog where photos, video and interviews are available.

If you’re available to join and support the plastic bag ban, the Bag Monster March will begin at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco at noon, winding through the Aquatic Park to Fisherman’s Warf and return back up Larkin Street to Ghirardelli Square’s West Plaza for a press conference in support of the state-wide ban. Even better if you can wear a bag monster costume!

In the coming days, the California State Senate will vote on a measure to ban the use of plastic bags in the state. If the bill passes it will be one step closer to becoming law, where California will be the first state to outright ban plastics bags.

The Bag Monsters are a great and innovative idea that combines activism and craft to make a political statement. If you’re in San Francisco, we’d love to see pictures of the monsters, so please share in the comments!

  1. We LOVE the bag monsters. Visuals definitely help. Unfortunately, SEATTLE of all places, where we live, refused to pass the bag ban. Unbelievable. Maybe Andy will inspire proponents to try again!
