Fab Fabrics: Eco-Friendly Jersey Options

Handmade T-shirt

I don’t know about you guys, but ever since Julie posted her amazingly helpful tips on sewing t-shirt fabric, I’ve had jersey on the brain.

Jersey is a finely knit cotton fabric, and just like with any other cotton, the conventional sort is not so great for the environment. Luckily, there are some great eco-friendly options for jersey out there! Here are a few:

Shopping Online

Green Depot has a few sweet, organic jersey fabrics in striped patterns. They also have plain white, which you could dye yourself!

If you’d rather not mess with dyes yourself, Gaia Fabrics has beautiful organic hemp jersey options in all sorts of colors. She uses MX Dye on her fabrics, which I wasn’t able to find very much information about. If you’re concerned about Earth friendly dyes, you might be better off picking up white jersey and dyeing your own.

Folks looking to buy in bulk might want to look into Jasco Fabric’s eco line. They’ve got a good color selection, and their prices get lower when you buy in higher quantity.

Get Thrity

You know we love thrifting, and second hand t-shirts are an excellent source of low-impact jersey fabric. Not only are you giving these finds a new life, but you’re helping keep all of that fabric out of the landfill.

Bonus Tip: One of the great things about jersey is that it’s pretty absorbent. If you’re left with fabric scraps at the end of your project, you can put them to use as rags for cleaning!
