Get Your Vintage Button On! Five (More) Crafty Button Projects

Button BroochIf there was such a thing as a crafty recycling Must List (What? No such thing as a crafty recycling Must List? I’m totally going to write one), vintage buttons would be at the top of that list (…and I’m going to put vintage buttons at the top when I write my list).

Not only has the entire CraftyStylish blog declared March as button month in celebration of West Coast Crafty’s new book, Button it Up, but we here at Crafting a Green World are known to love our buttons, too–check out these vintage button monogram pillows, or the felted wool weekend projects that include button-topped flowers. Flowers!

So if you finish all those up and you’re STILL craving yourself some button crafting, check out five more crafty little projects that will let you get your button on:

1. Again from CraftyStylish, this woven button coaster is just the prettiest thing. My favorite part is that the creation of it allows us crafty losers who don’t knit, crochet, or embroider to still do some needle-and-thread handwork on that long car trip.

2. If you don’t own any vintage buttons, just make yourself some! I tried (with limited success–next time, I’ll use a bigger circle punch) shrinking buttons from #6 plastic, but I like much better the polymer clay buttons from A Little Hut.

3. This isn’t a tutorial, but I find Perpetualplum’s weblog, in which she often writes of the inspiration behind and the techniques in creating her amazing recycled-components jewelry, such as these button bracelets, to be so helpful in starting my own little crafty sparks burning sometimes.

4. It takes a genius to make simple, beautiful things even more beautiful while keeping them just as simple–Bella Dia shows us how to make button clips out of a button and a paper clip. Yep, it’s just as simple as you imagine.

5. Cathie Filian makes button mosaics to decorate vases and picture frames. My favorite activity–gluing stuff to other stuff. Preferably with really strong glue.

What do you do with your buttons?
