DIY Patriotism: Awesome and Eco-Friendly Projects in Honor of our 44th President, Barack Obama

My girls watching the inauguration of President Barack ObamaY’all, our country hearts Obama today. Autumn has already been talking about some awesome Obama art she’s seen, Tina over at Eco Child’s Play talked about how to find green Obama souvenirs, and I wrote another post about inauguration activities  just for you to do with the kiddos.

You know what we’re lacking, though, right? Our own projects! We are crafty people, and it’s about time that we ourselves make some sweet crafty love with our man of the day, President Obama.

Sweet crafty love? Count me in!

Here’s a breakdown of some craftiness you can get yourselves into:

Pumpkinbear Obamicon1. Make your own Obamicon. Paste Magazine has a cool little gadgety thing that will let you make your own version of that iconic Shepard Fairey poster of Obama. Will you, too, be the benevolent yet powerful leader, or will you be Big Brother, like me?

2.  Of course, if you like the original Fairey poster, Subversive Cross Stitch is offering a free cross stitch pattern of the Obama Hope poster with every order. And you know what? It’s okay to watch TV if you’re also doing something productive, like needlework.

3. Some Craftster members have been having a lot of fun stencilling Obama images onto their T-shirts. If you’ve been meaning to try out freezer paper stencilling (easy and awesome!), try a Google Image search for plenty of free-game Obama stencils.

4. The Mad Cropper has a post showing off lots of different people’s Obama scrapbook layouts. See? THIS is what you do with all those newspaper articles and campaign mailers you’ve been hoarding!

5. Okay, this isn’t super crafty. But come on! It’s a Mad Libs version of President Obama’s inauguration address! If it turns out really good, I guess you could embroider it on something.

And when you’re done with all your crafting, submit it to the Obama Craft Project. It’s posterity, people.

Did you make any sweet crafty love with Obama this season?

  1. I love your Obamicon so much! I would totally put one on an overhead transparency, and use an overhead projector to help me make a mural out of that.

  4. Great ideas! I have to say I’m one of the many in this country who definitely do ‘not’ ~heart~ Obama, but these are nifty ideas to honor someone. Thanks for sharing!
