Thread the end of a spool of string with a hand-sewing needle. If you have to shop for a needle, especially if you plan to make a popcorn garland with a child, then look for a large needle, which is quite manageable even for small-ish fingers.
I like to wait to cut the thread off of the spool until I’m ready to tie the garland off. This also gives you some wiggle room–if you reach the end of the thread and haven’t finished your garland, tie it off, unwind another length of thread from the spool, cut it off, and begin again from the other end!

Cute! I never would have thought to “paint” the popcorn.
Spritzing it worked out MUCH better than my original plan of “Oh, I’ll just dunk it in the dye real quick!”. Yeah…no.
I just love this idea! And I’m from the south too and yeah I get it needing colored. Ooo ya know a great purple and yellow for LSU would be great in the front yards Christmas tree. =) Thanks for the idea.
If you are not going to dye it Razorback red, then I just don’t know what I’m going to do with you!
