When I moved into a rental home over a year ago, everything seemed to be up to par except for the kitchen. I’m not a huge fan of gold (sorry to those of you who love it) and all of the kitchen knobs were gold in addition to this gold, lattice-type insert that was in one section of cabinets.

Every time I passed it (100 times a day) my heart cried. That might be a little over dramatic, but I had finally had enough. Here’s how you can quickly update your updated cabinets, too!

What You Will Need:

+ An outdated kitchen cabinet insert

+ Spray paint. Spray paint isn’t the greenest product, so try to purchase low VOC spray paint, if you can.

How To Do It:

1. If you rent your home, ask your landlords if it’s okay to spray paint the cabinet inserts. Yes, you may think it is ugly, but your landlord might think otherwise. It’s always nice to double check and ask for their permission.

2. Remove the inserts. This step might look differently for you, but I just had to move these hooks to the side and the insert popped right out. Keep in mind that the same piece that holds the insert might hold the glass in place as well– you don’t want to break the glass in the process!

3. Spray paint the inserts! I chose to paint mine a dark brown/black color to match the dining room table. In the future, I might spray paint them a bright color to tie in the accent colors.

4. Once the paint is completely dry, put the inserts back inside the cabinet.

Doesn’t the color make a huge difference? Next up, the gold hardware!

Don’t have the option of painting? You can remove the inserts (and store them somewhere safe) and try some of these ideas:

+ Just keep the glass. Use an eco-friendly glass cleaner to make the glass shine. Then, put pretty dishes on display or put a decorative vase inside.
+ Place cute paper behind the glass. You can use recycled paper like sheet music or book pages, or recycled scrapbook paper.
+ Put an adorable eco-friendly fabric behind the glass! You could even reupholster your dining room chairs with the same fabric to tie the entire room together.
+ Remove the glass and staple chicken wire inside to give your cabinets a rustic look.
