Firefly Craft: Build A Recycled Firefly Hotel

Catching fireflies is something we all do as kids. But we can both admire and respect these creatures without harming them. So let's make a firefly craft!

Catching fireflies is something we all do as kids. But we can both admire and respect these creatures without harming them. So let's make a firefly craft!

In my opinion there’s only one perk to the hot, humid and sticky summer weather – FIREFLIES!  When the sun starts to go down and the humidity is high, that’s the perfect time to see the beautiful flicker of these amazing insects.

Just about every kid wants to catch ’em and keep them as pets in a jar. But we all know how that ends. Instead, build them a nice place to hang out for a few hours – like a five star firefly hotel. This firefly craft is what childhood memories are made of – and it doesn’t harm these beautiful creatures of summer.

Upcycled Firefly Hotel

Supplies

+ 1 glass jar and lid

+ glow-in-the-dark paint pens

+ 1 paper towel

+ grass and twigs

+ 4-6 firefly guests

+ hammer + nail

Nail

Directions

  1. Start with a super-clean jar. Use soap and water, but rinse it well so there’s no residue.
  2. Hammer one or two nail holes into the jar lid.  You’ll want to make lots more air holes, but one or two are plenty. This is the only step that’s best for an adult crafter to do. Otherwise, let the kids go crazy!
  3. On the top of your jar lid, write the words FIREFLY HOTEL or FIREFLIES WELCOME.  Use a glow-in-the dark paint pen so it lights up at night.
  4. Moisten a paper towel and lay it in the bottom of the jar.  This will provide lots of humidity for the fireflies.
  5. To make our blinkers feel at home, add some grass to the bottom of the hotel.
Grab a few twigs and stand them upright in your jar.
  6. Welcome 4-6 fireflies to your FIREFLY HOTEL and watch them glow for hours!

Remember, the FIREFLY HOTEL is only intended for a short visit.  Welcome your glowy guests at dusk and then set them free just before turning in for the night.  That’s plenty of time to watch them glimmer through the glass.
