Today I’m sharing a colorful chair planter that I created to sell in my craft booth. I created a similar chair planter last year, but this year I decided to take it up a notch with a bright, fun color!

What You Will Need

1. An old chair that has a broken or empty spot in the middle part of the seat. A lot of times you can find old cane chairs at thrift stores, garage sales, and antique stores that are missing the middle portion.

2. Eco-friendly paint. I used a bright blue, yellow, pink, and red paint.

3. One large paint brush and one small paint brush

4. Sand paper

5. A planter

6. Polycrylic

How To Do It

1. Lightly sand your chair. This will simply help the paint adhere to the surface of the chair.

2. If the middle portion of your chair was broken, go ahead and remove the rest of the parts. Just leave the frame around the middle portion in tact.

3. Wipe down the chair with a damp cloth to remove any dust from sanding.

4. Paint it! I started with the bright blue base first. Once it dried, my artistically inclined Mom painted the part that says “Welcome” in yellow. She also added adorable little flowers with pink and red paint!

5. As I always recommend for DIY furniture projects, protect your new paint job with Polycrylic. It isn’t the greenest craft supply, but it seals and protects your paint job, which will add years to the life of your furniture. I prefer Polycrylic vs. polyurethane because it doesn’t yellow.

6. Put a planter in the hole portion of the chair. I found mine at a thrift store for 99 cents — you can’t beat that! Make sure the lip of your planter will reach the edges of the chair (this is how it will stay in place).

Now you’re ready to put in your favorite plant! If I was keeping this planter, I would put in a plant with yellow flowers to coordinate with the yellow of the “Welcome” part.
