DIY Picture Frame from a Mason Jar Lid

Got some mason jar lids with no jars to go with them? Turn that old lid into a DIY picture frame. It makes a great gift!

We talk a lot about mason jar crafts around here, but a lot of those craft ideas don’t use the lids. If you’re like me, you’ve probably got a little stash of mason jar lids that no longer have jars to go with them. Here’s a fun little craft idea to turn that a mason jar lid and ring into a DIY picture frame.

I made this little DIY picture frame with a photo of my son as a thank you gift for my mom. I maybe had a freelance deadline-related meltdown a couple of weeks ago, and my amazing mother booked a flight up here to watch my baby boy so that I could get my work done. She’s a superstar, and she deserved a little thank you present for sure.

Mason Jar Lid DIY Picture Frame: Choosing Your Photo

The trick to making this DIY picture frame really work is choosing the right photo. A typical mason jar lid is 2 3/4″ in diameter, and the lip covers up another 1/4″. That means you need a photo that’s pretty small. You have a 2 1/2″ circle to work with.

When you’re tracing your circle onto your photo in the steps below, you also want to keep that 1/4″ lip in mind. Leave your photo about 1/8″ of breathing room around the whole outside, so the part that shows doesn’t look cramped in your frame.

My favorite part about this DIY picture frame is that you don’t have to create a hanging apparatus. The mason jar ring works perfectly!

Materials

+ mason jar lid and ring

+ spray paint in the color of your choice (preferably, zero VOC spray paint)

+ scrap paper or cardboard, to paint on

+ photo that you want to frame

+ permanent marker

+ scissors

+ Mod Podge

+ superglue of your choice

+ nail, for hanging

Directions

1. Go outside and lie your mason jar ring right side up on your piece of paper or cardboard, then spray paint it with a few thin coats. Leave that to dry while you work on the rest of your DIY picture frame.

2. Decide what part of your photo you want to put into your frame, and use the mason jar lid as a template. Trace your circle with your permanent marker, and cut it out. Smear the back with your Mod Podge, and glue the picture to the front of your mason jar lid. Go fix a cup of coffee, relax, and give everything about an hour to dry.

3. When the Mod Podge is completely dry, go outside and get that mason jar ring, which should also be dry by now. Apply a thin line of superglue all the way around the inner rim on the back of your mason jar ring, then nestle your photo inside it, pressing for 30 seconds to get a good seal.

4. Let it dry for about an hour, then you’re ready to wrap it up as a gift or hang it on the wall!
