Homemade Wood Polish with Only Two Ingredients

Homemade Wood Polish with Only Two Ingredients!

Store-bought furniture polish may make your wood table look beautiful, but the chemicals in it are skin, eye, and airway irritants, and it may be aerosol-based or contain petroleum byproducts.

Seriously, you don’t want to rub something like that onto the table where you eat.

We’re starting off Spring Cleaning Week with one of my favorite recipes: my homemade wood polish. This two-ingredient wood polish takes a few minutes to make, lasts just about forever, and can be used on everything from your coffee table to your cutting board to your kids’ wooden toys.

But the best part of this homemade wood polish is: no aerosols! No petroleum by-products. No skin, eye, or airway irritants. No toxic chemicals whatsoever.

Homemade Wood Polish

Here’s how to make it:

You will need:

  • locally-sourced beeswax, or a vegan wax alternative. Beeswax is a great kids’ craft supply, and a major ingredient in many homemade bath and body recipes, so it’s worth having on hand.
  • oil. We use olive oil, but any shelf-stable liquid oil can be substituted.

Homemade Wood Polish with Only Two Ingredients! To make this wood polish, simply pour one cup of liquid oil into a thrifted glass jar or Mason jar, then heat the oil in the microwave until it’s very warm, though not boiling. Melt some beeswax in a bain-marie or crock pot, then measure out 1/3 cup of melted wax and pour it into the jar with the hot liquid oil.

If you would like to include an essential oil–tea tree oil for disinfecting, perhaps, or pine oil for that woody scent–then add several drops to the jar at this time.

Screw the lid tightly onto the jar, and shake it well. It won’t take long for the beeswax to harden, and when it does, your wood polish is ready! If you get distracted and your wax hardens before you’ve mixed it, simply warm the jar again in the bain-marie or crock pot, then shake it up.

Homemade Wood Polish with Only Two Ingredients! To apply this wood polish, first clean your wood item well, then rub the polish into it with your hands–it’s great for your skin! Give the wood plenty of time to soak in the polish–an hour, about–and then buff the wood well with a soft cloth.

Store your homemade wood polish, in its lovely glass jar, on a shelf in your kitchen so that everyone can see it; this is one cleaning product that you don’t have to hide! And just so you can remember how safe the ingredients in your wood polish are, and how you can make more, paste on one of these free printable labels that we’ve made for you to help you celebrate Spring Cleaning Week!

And don’t forget to check back tomorrow, when Spring Cleaning Week continues with my recipe for homemade laundry soap–you’re going to love how much money you’ll save by making your own laundry soap!

  7. I’ve read that when using vinegar on wood it must be diluted. The olive oil dilutes it. Even websites that sell hardwood recommend this mixture so I think it is probably safe. To be sure though I’m going to try it on some hardwood flooring that was already in bad shape when we pulled up the carpet.
