How-to: Make Reusable Baby Wipes

How to Make Baby Wipes

It’s super simple to make reusable baby wipes to reduce waste and save yourself some cash!

For the eco-mama, cloth diapering is a no-brainer, right? You save money in the long run by using cloth, and you keep pounds and pounds of soiled disposable diapers out of the landfill at the same time. A win for you and the planet!

Cloth diapers rock, but what about wipes? Those disposable wet wipes add up, too – both in your budget and in the landfill. Reusable wipes can be kind of a pain, though. You can use them dry, but they don’t do the best job, do they? Or, you can keep some water by the changing table and moisten each one, but that extra step becomes a lot when you’re changing 8-10 diapers a day.

The beauty of these reusable wipes is that you moisten them all from the get-go, so when it’s changing time they are just as convenient as the disposables. Once you cut your fabric, moistening the wipes – including mixing up the liquid – takes less than 5 minutes, so it’s actually faster than buying them at the store!

How to Make Reusable Baby Wipes

Materials

  • 1/2 yard organic flannel fabric
  • sewing machine, serger, or pinking shears
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • mild baby soap
  • plastic bag or Wipe Warmer

Directions

1. Cut your flannel fabric into 15 6″ squares. Use your sewing machine’s zigzag stitch or your serger to finish off the raw edges. You can also cut these out with pinking shears and skip the sewing all together!

2. Place the wipes in a bowl large enough to hold them all.

3. In a separate bowl, combine the water, oil, and a few pumps of the baby soap. Stir well, and pour the mixture over your wipes in the large bowl.

4. Store your wet wipes in a plastic bag or in the Wipe Warmer

I know, a Wipe Warmer might sound like not the greenest option, and you’re probably right. But! If your child screams every time you change him because the cold wipes make him uncomfortable, it might be worth the investment. My son hated getting his diaper changed until we gave in and got a warmer. I was against it when we first saw it at the store, but seeing my son laying calmly while we change him has been worth it!

  1. This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing. Wipe warmers? Gee we don’t have them in Australia. Aromatherapy oils would also be great to include in the mix. Especially if little bottoms have nappy rash. A few drops of Lavender or Chamomile would be perfect, you probably wouldn’t need the soap as well. The oils should be enough. They would have to be high quality though or it may burn their skin. I believe this sort of thing can also be done with paper towel which is cheaper but probably not as environmentally friendly.
