Review: The Pick Punch for Making DIY Guitar Picks

Pick Punch

Play the guitar? Use a guitar pick? Ever wanted to make your own?

You can! I use the Pick Punch to make DIY guitar picks, primarily out of old credit cards and gift cards, but also from a wide variety of materials that I wouldn’t necessarily have thought of in my days of store-bought guitar picks.

To make a guitar pick out of a credit card or gift card using the Pick Punch, you simply find a good spot and punch it out! The only tricky part is the sanding–not that it’s tricky to sand the edges of a plastic guitar pick, BUT it may be tricky to remember that you’ll need sandpaper in the first place, since the process is otherwise the work of seconds.

Although using new materials isn’t eco-friendly the way that upcycling useless gift cards and credit cards is, if you’re a fan of the handmade guitar pick as an art form, then you can use the Pick Punch to make some really spectacular creations. The methods for making unique, artistic guitar picks include alcohol ink stamping with handmade stamps, decoupage, water-slide transfer, and drawing and painting.

Some guitar players claim that material and method for making guitar picks are important to their guitar playing, and choose to make their own guitar picks so that they can bevel an edge for a left-handed player, or add a certain amount of give; I am NOT a guitar player of that caliber. As beginners, my kids and I like these handmade guitar picks because they’re free and easy to replace when they get goofed around with and lost or broken. And I can quickly make another pick when the kids are fighting over the same one, and they can be decorated with Sharpies, AND the kids like to make them and then use them, which gets them to practice more…need I go on?

P.S. Don’t want to punch a guitar pick? You can also trace and hand-cut one!

  1. I have wanted the guitar pick maker doodad! Not that we were playing around with the guitar yet, but now that we are attempting it, handmade picks are even more enticing.
