DIY Maternity Skirt from An Old Pair of Shorts
Materials
- old pair of denim shorts that were a little roomy before you got pregnant
- old t-shirt that fits you snugly
- enough elastic to fit snugly around your body, just below your boobs
- sewing machine, thread, pins, iron…the usual
Directions
1. Convert your skirt into shorts. I used this tutorial from Crimson Owl, and it worked out swimmingly! She has directions lower down for converting a skirt that has a zipper, so use those directions if yours has one like mine does.
2. Get your skirt ready for a maternity waistband! This tutorial from DIY Maternity shows you how to prep something with a zipper for a maternity waistband. If you don’t mind that kind of low waist band, you can just follow this tutorial and skip the next step, but if you prefer the kind of waistband that doesn’t put as much pressure on your bump, move on to step 3.
3. Add the waistband. For the waistband, you’ll use that t-shirt that you picked out. I used the exact same technique for this skirt as I did for my first maternity skirt. You can check out how to make the t-shirt waistband here.
This project took me about two hours, but that includes time finding those first two tutorials. If you’re a seasoned seamster, I bet that you could turn out this skirt in an hour or hour and a half.
Have you guys made any of your own maternity clothes? It’s been fun turning old wardrobe pieces that I wasn’t even wearing much before getting pregnant into clothes that I wear on a regular basis!
I was thinking that was a little short, LOL! It looks really well done though! I have a few maternity refashions I made and wore before it go too cold if you’re looking for more ideas 🙂 http://swoodsonsays.wordpress.com/category/maternity/
