DIY Beauty: Make Your Own Perfume

Make Your Own Perfume!

Store-bought perfumes and colognes are bad news. They’re usually loaded with mystery ingredients, including one that’s particularly troublesome: “fragrance.”

What’s so bad about fragrance? Because of cosmetics labeling laws, companies don’t have to disclose certain proprietary ingredients, and that includes a slough of chemicals that they use to create their signature scents. These ingredients are considered company secrets, so instead of telling consumers exactly what chemicals they use, they can lump it all together and just call it “fragrance.”

That means that fragrance can almost mean anything on a label. When the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics tested synthetic fragrances, it found some very unhealthy chemicals, including allergens, neurotoxins, and hormone disruptors.

This all might sound a little bit doom and gloom, but don’t fret! You don’t need harmful chemical fragrance to smell great. Instead of relying on the perfume counter, grab your favorite all natural essential oils and make your very own perfume from scratch! Here’s how.

Materials

  • 2 oz. glass spray bottle
  • grain alcohol
  • essential oils of your choice – If you’re just getting started with essential oils, head to your local natural foods store and spend some time smelling the different options to see what you like. If you don’t want to make your own blend, you can often find pre-made blends that smell delicious!

Directions

Put 30-40 drops of the essential oil – depending on how strong it smells – into your spray bottle. Top off with the alcohol, close the bottle, and give it a good shake to blend everything together. You can use your homemade perfume just like any other perfume or cologne.
