Upcycled Candle Holder into a Mini Easter Basket

Upcycled Candle Holder into a Mini Easter Basket

It seems too early to even think about Easter, but Easter goodies are already showing up in the stores! Before you spend money on items at the big box stores, try eco-friendly DIY projects like this one! As you know from my upcycled candle jar, I love using the jars from candles that are burned out. This week my roommate found three red candle holders (picture below) and said, “I bet you could make something for Easter with these.” With her help, we came up with the perfect project– mini Easter baskets!

What You Will Need:

1. Candle holders, candle jars, or really any small jar that you have around.

2. Scrapbook paper. I’m still using left over paper that I had from the upcycled chocolate heart box wall art! To make this project even more eco-friendly, you could use old book pages, sheet music, or newspaper. You also have several options for recycled scrapbook paper like the Green Stack Collection, Eco-Friendly Recycled Scrapbook Paper, and Recycled Kraft Paper for Scrapbooking.

3. Tape.

4. School glue. If you can, use Eco Glue— it’s more eco-friendly!

5. Magazine.

6. Scissors.

How To Do It:

1. Measure and cut out a piece of paper to wrap around your candle holder. I used pastel colors to go along with the Easter theme. I taped the beginning of the paper to the candle holder, wrapped it around, and then put another piece of tape like so:

2. Cut small strips of paper for the “handle” of the Easter basket. I used colors that were different from the color of the basket, but that’s completely up to you.

3. Slide your “handles” into the sides of the “basket.” I didn’t attach them in any way because they will only be decoration. If you have little ones that might try to pick them up by the “handle,” though, you might want to attach them with tape.

Here are the three baskets with their handles:

4. Add decoration. My roommate cut out cute shapes like a bunny, an Easter egg, and a flower to put on each basket. If you have children, you could have them decorate their own mini basket or personalize it with their name.

5. Glue your decorations onto your basket.

6. Next, we are going to make “filler” for your baskets with strips of magazines instead of using the green, plastic filler they sell in stores. Cut small strips of your magazine like so:

7. Fold each strip back and forth so it looks like this in the end:

Once you put the filler in your baskets, you’re done!

You can put candy in the mini baskets as well and even give them as gifts! Who would you make a mini Easter basket for? Share your ideas on our facebook wall or in the comment section below!

I have been collecting lids from spray cans. such as PAM non-stick and others that come to mind. These would work great instead of the glass candle holders.
